Dance Hall and Picture Palace: Sydney's Romance with Modernity

Jill Julius Matthews
LIMITED STOCK available - only from Currency Press direct.

Set in the city of Sydney over thirty tumultuous years of prosperity, between the two great depressions of the late 1890s and the late 1920s. The author explores how the pleasures of cinema, as well as radio, gramophone records and cheap magazines, suffused the city and its people with new practices and values, and also shows how the people of Sydney were encouraged both to enjoy and to regulate those pleasures, and in the process learning the ways to make themselves modern, as Australians and as citizens of the world.

Review
In its careful attention to the producers and consumers of culture and through its development of a beautifully phrased and tenacious argument, it constitutes an exemplary study in Australian cultural history. - Professor Richard Waterhouse,  Australian Humanities Review

Gallipoli: The Front Line Experience

Tolga Örnek & Feza Toker
LIMITED STOCK available - only from Currency Press direct.

The official film tie-in for the acclaimed feature-length documentary, Gallipoli, by Turkish filmmaker Tolga Ornek which tells the story of Gallipoli as it's never been told before. The book incorporates significant material not included in the film as it describes life in the trenches through the letters, diaries, photographs and drawings of soldiers on both sides of the battle. Like the film, the book also draws on interviews with international experts. Splendidly illustrated, it includes two foldout maps and a poster.

Review
It's the manner of the telling that will shake you, for it comes from inside the belly of the beast ... somehow Ornek makes it echo more powerfully than ever. - Sandra Hall, Sydney Morning Herald

Grass Roots

Geoffrey Atherden, Katherine Thomson & Michael Brindley
LIMITED STOCK available - only from Currency Press direct.

This collection of eight scripts from the first series of Grass Roots, first broadcast on ABC TV, is a hugely entertaining read, characterised by concise and witty dialogue. The scripts include the often hilarious stage directions which have, up until now, been known only to a select few. Much of the comedy centres on the minutiae of council business and the power plays so rife in politics.

Last Chance Gas

Kevin Densley & Steve Taylor
LIMITED STOCK available - only from Currency Press direct.

Grunge meets cabaret in a morbidly entertaining mix set in a post-apocalyptic world.

The less than amiable Priata operates a gas station out along the highway. Whether or not he gives precious fuel to passers-by is based on how well they can amuse him — juggling, singing, magic tricks, sexual favours. Those who do not amuse are condemned to the 'post heap' with the also-rans.

Last Chance Gas has its own highly theatrical language and gives plenty of scope for performers to develop their own tricks.

Late in the afternoon of 9 June 1951, Ben Chifley returns to his modest home in Bathurst to write a key speech which he will deliver at the ALP Conference in Sydney the next day. Having recently led his party to its second defeat at the polls, it is a time of challenge for the Labor leader. The dreams he nurtured for post-war Australia lie shattered and his health is failing. His life now seems but an epilogue to earlier aspiration and power. It is a time for decisions but equally a time for reflection on life as national political leader and as a man—a local man. Chifley died in Canberra four days later.
