AUTHOR OF THE MONTH
 
Sue Smith is Currency’s author of the month for May. Her latest work Bastard Boys – a mini series about the waterfront dispute in 1998 – will premiere on the ABC on Sunday 13 and Monday 14 May at 8:30pm.

SYDNEY WRITER’S FESTIVAL

Romulus, My Father premieres on Tuesday 29 May, 6:30–9:30pm in the Sydney Theatre. Preceding the screening, Raimond Gaita, screenwriter Nick Drake, director Richard Roxburgh, producer Robert Connolly and actor Eric Bana will discuss the adaptation process of the story from text to screenplay to film with Annette Shun Wah. A further screening and discussion with screenwriter Nick Drake will take place at the Bowral New Empire Theatre on Friday 1 June, 7-10pm. For bookings call 1300 657 559.

Dominic Hong Duc Golding

Vietnamese war-baby Dominic Hong Duc Golding was airlifted out of Saigon at the end of the Vietnam War and adopted into an Australian family in Mount Gambier. In 1999, he returned to Vietnam for his own tour of duty.

A co-production by La Mama and Melbourne Workers Theatre, Shrimp takes us to the streets of war-torn Saigon, the wet pastures of Mount Gambier and the varied landscapes of modern Vietnam where Dom returns to find his family.

AUTHOR NEWS / AWARDS

* Tommy Murphy and Debra Oswald have been shortlisted for the Play Award of the NSW Premier's Literary Awards for their plays Holding the Man and The Peach Season.

Further Currency authors amongst the nominees are Campion Decent for Embers (Play Award), Tony Ayres for The Home Song Stories, Marc Rosenberg for The December Boys, Katherine Thomson for Answered by Fire - Part Two (Script Writing Award), Michael Gurr for Days Like These (Douglas Stewart Prize for non-fiction) and Gail Jones for Dreams of Speaking (Christina Stead Prize for fiction). Gail has also been shortlisted for the Miles Franklin Award. Currency Press congratulates all nominees.

* Patricia Cornelius and Katherine Thomson have been shortlisted for the Patrick White Playwrights’ Award. The winner of the Award will be announced by Robyn Nevin, Artistic Director of STC on Saturday 2 June at 2:15pm. The winning play will then be presented in a rehearsed reading by STC artists in association with the Sydney Writers Festival. Bookings essential (tickets $5), call (02) 9250 1777.
