October 2009 PP Cranney

My first theatre experience was… being taken to a pantomime by my grandparents when I was very young.  Buttons threw lollies to the audience — I was hooked!

If I was a character in a play I'd be…Hamlet, I think, I can never make up my mind and I'm such a procrastinator!

I hate theatre when… it costs an arm and a leg and bores my bum off.

Playwrights who inspire me ….too many to list (but it would include John Romeril whose craft and commitment I find inspiring – I’m honoured and thrilled to be included in an  anthology with him.)

The best line that never made it into one of my plays is ... as above – too many to list!

My best moment working in the theatre was ... the opening of Loco by Sidetrack Theatre way back  in the early '80s in a canteen at Chullora railway workshops. The play was about the lives of the railway workers – they were the audience and they loved it. My mum and dad were there as well.

Heroes or villains - whose side are you on…? These days I prefer shades of grey to black & white, though maybe that’s because I just  can't make up my mind (see above).

My last big laugh was about… 5 minutes ago.

My last big whinge was about…5 minutes before that (I  suffer terrible mood swings.)

The role of theatre in 21st century Australia is… varied.  I believe there are different forms of theatre that play different roles for different communities.   (Though it would be great if they all threw lollies to the audience!)
