Two strong expressionist plays from early in O'Neill's career.

The Hairy Ape (1922)
The first tells of an animalistic stoker, symbolically named Yank, who, spurned by a society woman, breaks out of the engine room and goes in search of himself in the 'real' world.

'A bitter, brutal, wildly fantastic play of nightmare hue and nightmare distortion . '  New York Times

All God's Chillun Got Wings (1924)
The second deals with a mixed marriage, in which the neurotically jealous white wife destroys her black husband's chances of a career before going berserk and lapsing into a remorseless dependency on him.
