A Moon for the Bisbegotten, written in 1943, was O'Neill's last completed play. Autobiographical like its companion pieces, Long Day's Journey into Night and The Iceman Cometh, both also from the same period, Moon is based on the broken life of O'Neill's alcoholic brother James. Not without humour, the play 'may have the outline of melodrama, but that outline is filled with a raw passion and unassuageable guilt such as you rarely find in the modern theatre ... Your senses tell you that you are in the presence of a master.' - Michael Billington
