When Jon Fosse (b. 1959) made his playwright début with And We Shall Never Part at the National Theatre in Bergen in 1994, he was already an established author of several novels, collections of poetry and children’s books. His breakthrough in 1996 with the world premiere of Someone Will Arrive at the Norwegian Theatre confirmed his place as a playwright of international standard. Having written since then over twenty more plays, Jon Fosse has become the world’s most performed contemporary European playwright.

The Luminous Darkness is a book about award winning writer Jon Fosse’s writing for the theatre, examining the attraction of audiences, actors and directors to these exceptional dramas. Leif  Zern finds his way to the core of the dramatic world created by Fosse, analysing the basic insights on which his writing is based and describing the way various European directors and theatres have chosen to stage his plays.
