Cardenio

Cardenio $23.63 ex GST
$25.99 inc GST
Based on an episode in Don Quixote, the play known as Cardenio by Shakespeare and Fletcher has disappeared but it forms the basis of an 18th-century piece, The Double Falsehood, by Lewis Theobald. By excising Theobald’s additions and inserting passages from contemporary Spanish plays on the same theme,  Associate Director Greg Doran has come up with a brilliant new text which is the nearest we are likely to come to the play that Shakespeare and Fletcher originally wrote.

It tells the story of a girl who dresses as a shepherd boy to follow her love into the mountains. It will be recognised as a major act of theatrical archaeology – the equivalent of ‘restoring’ a painting by a master which has been damaged and overpainted by others.
