Widowing of Mrs Holroyd, The

Drama Classics: The World's Great Plays at a Great Little Price

Widowing of Mrs Holroyd, The $12.72 ex GST
$13.99 inc GST
Trapped in a brutish marriage, Mrs Holroyd begins to wish her husband dead when she accepts the advances of another man. Resentment, anger, lust and betrayal ripple out to touch all the family.

Written in 1911, first published in a revised edition in 1914, The Widowing of Mrs Holroyd is based on Lawrence’s short story Odour of Chrysanthemums. Partly based on his parents’ turbulent relationship and the effect it had on his early years, the play resonated with audiences despite the dark subject matter and the intensity of the drama. It has been filmed several times for television.
