Queer Voices

Queer Voices $26.32 ex GST

Although his mainstream career has recently included major work for the RSC and the National, the four new pieces here show just how close playwright and director Neil Bartlett has stayed to the radical queer cultural roots that first brought him to prominence in the early 1980s. The first three pieces are hit-and-run dramatic monologues that bring all his trademark wit, tenderness and insight to bear on the issues that run throughout his work – the pleasures of the flesh, the power of love and the necessity of anger. The last piece -  The Remarkable Rocket - is a quartet for four voices, and uses Oscar Wilde’s diamond-sharp children’s story of 1888 as the springboard for a haunting meditation on the enduring power of Wilde – to inspire, dazzle and move.

A follow on from his earlier collection Solo Voices, this new collection is vivid, fierce and tender, with four delightful and highly actable new works from one of British theatre’s most idiosyncratic voices.

Neil Bartlett is one of his generation's most respected and innovative theatre directors. His highly individual translations of French and German classical theatre, and characteristically theatrical adaptations of Dickens, most of them originated while he was Artistic Director of the Lyric Hammersmith in London, have been played around the world. His plays have premiered at the Royal Court, at the Manchester International Festival and at the National Theatre in London.
