Americana: Utah Blue / Over Milk Wood

Dic Edwards

Two plays from this uncompromising Welsh dramatist about what he calls ‘the evicted’. His characters serve as a metaphor for Wales itself: lost, angry and in search of an identity.

Utah Blue
a powerful reworking of the story of Gary Gilmore, the man who killed two black men and then famously insisted the state carry out the death penalty it had imposed upon him.

A brooding, provocative play...a challenging piece...uncompromising in its violence, brutality and sexual obsession - Independent

Over Milk Wood
follow Hugh Pugh, a character of Dylan Thomas, as he heads into the Bronx, trying to exorcise the curse of being portrayed as a murderer.

Franco’s Bastard / Lola Brecht

Dic Edwards
Two plays for a post-modern Europe in which language is used not to communicate but to excommunicate.

Franco's Bastard
Looks at nationalism and terrorism within a small European country searching for identity.
Lola Brecht
Set in an imaginary enclave engulfed by war in the heartland of Europe's turbulent present.

Both plays deal with their subjects with a humour that tests audiences, and on Edwards' belief that theatre is a vital and radical forum for the debating of issues necessary to the health of democracy.

Cast : Franco's Bastard - 2M, 2F / Lola Brecht - 3M, 1F

Two Immortality Plays

The Pimp / Solitude

Dic Edwards
The two plays in this collection ring fascinating new changes on the well-worn contrast between a writer's life and work.

The Pimp
This biographical play is an elegant dance of death for four characters: the poet Charles Baudelaire, his mixed-race mistress Jeanne Duval, his respectable but repressed mother and his hypocritical legal adviser. Each of them has a part to play in the poetry as well as the tragedy of Baudelaire's life.

The play is a triumph, confronting the repellent side of human nature but also celebrating love and loyalty.

Brilliant and often surreal - the blocked writer Trecci (a character loosely based on the novelist Alexander Trocchi) wishes to be left alone on his barge, only stepping out for a riotous visit to the pub and an occasional sexual encounter with his neighbour's one-legged wife. But when his only friend brings round a potential conquest - an attractive young man who turns out to be an attractive young woman - Trecci is unwillingly drawn back into the world outside.
