Biography
Eunice Hanger (1911–1972) was an actor, director and dramatist. Disturbed by Australian dramatists' ignorance of playwriting other than gritty realism, in 1958 Hanger began to collect manuscripts of Australian plays to teach the history of Australian theatre at the University of Queensland (Brisbane). The university's Fryer Library holds the Hanger Collection, which comprises some 2000 unpublished playscripts—the largest collection in the country. Hanger's own plays were popular among amateurs in the 1950s and 1960s. She was an early champion of Ray Mathew and Patrick White and she edited several collections of Australian drama.
