Any Given Day

Linda McLean

Bill and Sadie, in late middle age, live a fortress existence in their flat in the city. A stone comes through the window. Bill goes to get some bread and fails to take his keys, leaving Sadie perilously alone. Meanwhile their niece, Jackie, is deciding not to visit them after all…

Often hilarious, ultimately chilling, Any Given Day is a deliberately heightened riff on urban isolation. A searing, poetic and hard-hitting exploration of our fear of the unknown and responsibility towards ourselves and others, from one of Scotland’s leading playwrights.

Glory on Earth

Linda McLean

Tuesday, 19 August, 1561, 9 a.m. Through the fog a ship arrives in Leith docks, and Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots, steps ashore. She is eighteen and on her young shoulders rest the hopes of the Catholic establishment of Europe.

The nation that receives her has just outlawed her church and its practices. Its leader is the radical cleric and protestant reformer, John Knox. Both believe themselves ordained by God. Both believe themselves beloved by their people. Both were exiled and returned home… but only one can make Scotland their own.

Sex & God

Linda McLean

Four women from different moments in the twentieth century talk across time in Linda McLean's extraordinary play about faith, lust and family.

Jane, a kitchen maid, the first in her family to move to the big city for work; Lizzie, passionate but unskilled and permanently dodging poverty; Sally, an early school-leaver who escapes a dangerous relationship by working her way into a profession; and Fiona, first in her family to go to university and discover a world of bewildering choices.

Shimmer

Linda McLean

No-one's day is going to plan.

Petal, Missy and Hen are on their way to the island of Iona, looking for a miracle. When their train is halted by floods, they are forced to stay at a B & B by Loch Lomond and contemplate different endings to their adventure.

Jim, Guy and Sonny are also at the B & B. Guy is determined to make his own adventure, but Jim and Sonny's experiences make them equally determined to shelter him and stop history repeating.

Surrounded by rain, rivers, lochs and floods, three generations of memory and experience ebb and flow through Linda McLean's lyrical new play.

Shimmer shows how strange weather and circumstances allow glimpses of others they have loved and lost, and offers them all the tantalising opportunity to dream it better.

Review
Beautiful and compelling... McLean's writing has a shimmer all its own and the play's fascinating construction has the lyricism of Lorca crossed with the ingenuity of a Priestley play. -  Guardian
