Refuge: A Collection of Four Plays

The Bridge / Crowded House / Home / The Yum Yum Room

PP Cranney et al

Four plays that look at our need to have a special place, introduced by Kate Mulvany.

The Bridge, by Chris Thompson
Just out of town, the bridge is a sanctuary for a group of young people until one suicides and shatters the small community. Chris Thompson’s moving play explores the search for belonging during the transition from adolescence to autonomy.

  • An authentic, powerful drama, psychologically astute, beautifully paced. It is a work that will resonate for both the rural community and a wider audience.  -  The Age

Crowded House, by John Romeril
John Romeril takes the search for security into a future dystopia where, in a terrifying twist on survival of the fittest, the young are hunted in the streets -  an imaginative and gripping drama in which home is wherever you can hide, and wherever camaraderie can be found.

  •   Watch John Romeril   in The  Lost Repertoire - remembering, recognising and rejoicing in our Australian theatrical repertoire.

Home, by PP Cranney
PP Cranney takes three perspectives in his compelling play,  pitting suburban trivialities against the lives of the homeless, and the hardships of two young refugees separated from their family.

The Yum Yum Room , by Stephen House
Looks at issues of trust, vulnerability and ritual. 17-year-old Tom wants to be a DJ, his dad would prefer that he finished school and stopped smoking dope. This gentle script explores tough issues with tenderness and humour.
