Description

If happy families are all alike and unhappy families are unhappy in their own way, where does that leave the mad ones?

In Kodie Bedford's loving and hilarious ode to growing up in a family affected by mental illness, everyone is up for getting offended. Name a group and she skewers it … because the family members here fit into most of them.

Set on the windswept edge of Western Australia, Cursed! is an outrageously witty deathbed reunion scene of epic proportions. With her nan on her way out of this world, her brother Sebastian on his way out of the closet, her sister Marie losing track of the lies she has told, and her mother Dawn losing her grip on reality, Bernadette wonders if she will be the only one left with the capacity to hold this disparate family together. Or the madness to try.

Winner of Best Stage Play and the Major AWGIE at the 2021 Australian Writers' Guild Awards

'A play of outrageous wit and deep thought' —The Conversation

'Kodie Bedford's raucously funny debut play gives us a big-hearted story that sings true' —Limelight

Biography
Kodie Bedford
Kodie Bedford

KODIE BEDFORD was born in Geraldton, Western Australia, with strong family ties to East Kimberley. Her best memories consist of her listening to her family spin yarns recounting town legends, family feats and spilling the odd secret. It was solid training for storytelling and, after watching an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Kodie decided that she wanted to be a screenwriter. Kodie moved to Sydney to work as a cadet journalist for SBS in 2008 for Indigenous current affairs program Living Black. She then worked at the ABC as a researcher/producer for documentary series Message Stick. Never forgetting her dream of wanting to be a screenwriter, Kodie made the jump to television drama where her credits include Mystery Road (ABC), Summer Love (ABC), Firebite (AMC+) and All My Friends are Racist (ABC). Kodie received the 2019 Balnaves Fellowship to develop her own play with Belvoir Theatre, Cursed!, which was staged in 2020 and won both best stage play and the major award at the 2021 Australian Writers’ Guild Awards. At home Kodie likes to drink copious amounts of tea, catch up on royal family news and spend time with rescue staffy Pocket.
